The breaking dawn of vampire stories . . .

Vampires are in the news lately. If you haven’t heard of “Twilight” or the author, Stephanie Meyers, you don’t have a teenage girl anywhere around you within earshot. This vampire romance series has been the most popular book among teenage and young adult women for the last three or four years. And, just recently, the last book in the series, “Breaking Dawn” was published to record sales.

In that book we finally find out who Bella is going to choose, the vampire, Edward or the werewolf. Who to spend the rest of your life with? Wolf or bat? The reviews have been all over the place. Rabid fans (pardon the pun) exalt that Bella finally chose her man. Others found themselves somewhat let down saying things like, “what was she thinking?”

Now, as an author I understand these responses. Just look at how George Lucas was vilified after the first three Star Wars movies came out. No one could have lived up to that expectation. Neither could “Breaking Dawn” no matter what story Ms. Meyers chose  to tell. Choosing that path for your characters is a singular and unique challenge. We already know where we are going with the story and with the characters. The reader doesn’t. But, the reader can dream and grow along with the books and their expectations can often stray from the author’s path.

No matter how hard you try, you will let someone down. Even J. K. Rowling who got universally good reviews for the ending of the Harry Potter series was soundly criticized for the lifestyle choices of a certain headmaster wizard that Rowling revealed after the book came out.

For instance, I am now beginning the final rewrite of “The 11th Demon: Children of the Bloodstone” with the realization that I must take the story in a given direction to make it consistent with the overall “mythology” of my book series. And in going in this direction, I will be straying from a path some of my readers have already decided I should take. But, I must be true to the story that originated this series and so, I will take the hits and the accolades as they come knowing I have been true to my story. Will it be different? Yes. Will it be bizarre? You bet. Will it defy believability? I hope not! But, it will be entertaining. That I can guarantee.

So, to anyone who strays into this blog or my website searching for a different kind of vampire story whether you loved “Breaking Dawn”, hated “Breaking Dawn” or you never heard of it, please pick up “The 12th Demon: Vampyre Majick” and give it a try. As one website devoted to vampires said,An interesting, unique story that I feel many of my vamp fans will enjoy. I recommend it.” The review even went so far as to suggest I approached the style of the Anne Rice vampire novels.

By the way, I am reading the Twilight series and I am enjoying it even though I am far from being even remotely similar to a teenager girl with a crush on the most handsome vampire in history.

In fact, I was doing a search on Google and found the book on sale in Europe! I guess vampyres are truly international in appeal.

So, here is a scoop on the third book. Are you ready? I thought I’d give you a tantalizing little tidbit about the events in “The 11th Demon: Children of the Bloodstone”.

Jonathan Steel must face a horrible demon in the attic of an old woman’s home and he ends up in the hospital.

Josh gets burned while trying to come to the aid of some “hot babes”.

Rene Miller’s beach home is broken into by a hostile presence and she has to use deadly force to stop it.

Vivian Darbonne Ketrick Wulf journeys into the very heart of “hell” to finally meet the members of the Council of Darkness!

Flying saucers over Washington, D.C.!

Jonathan Steel and a new character are trapped beneath the earth in an ancient burial chamber and face certain death!

The pale skinned evil fiend, Lucas returns!

And, we finally see face to face the Master of Evil, the Father of Lies, the Prince of Darkness!

So, if you want to read the next book, help “The 12th Demon” sell out over and over so I can get the next book published! Until then, keep your eyes on the sky!
